Click the Security tab. Usually, click the Custom Level button. Slowly scroll through the list of settings until you finally find “ActiveX Controls, then Plugins”.

, some of us covered the basics of ActiveX controls. Today, in addition to managing ActiveX controls, we will look at someKey features of ActiveX interaction with the Internet Explorer environment. The default installation location for ActiveX operating systems is %windir%Downloaded Files. You should normally see the control itself as well as an .INF file that will likely be included in the .CAB file if it is uploaded to the client during Gear installation. Note that the OS sees the systems, this location is a special type of list, so you need to use a CMD window to view the installed files in their live boot state.

This is an example of what your family might see if you could access this folder using only Internet Explorer and then select Internet Options -> Preferences -> View Items. If you right-click on an individual control and look at the inherited sheet, you will see several fields Many key information we can get from each individual control, including:

  • date of creation
  • Last access time
  • GUID (unique identifier)
  • Codebase (where the ActiveX control comes from)

With the release of Windows XP Service Pack 5 (SP5) and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Internet Explorer introduced a feature manager for ActiveX controls called the Core Add-ons Manager (shown below). This new user interface provides improved validation that gives you very precise control over the ActiveX controls that are loaded into the Internet Explorer process at startup. In this control UI, we can always enable, disable, and finally update ActiveX controls.
